Complete your NZ Traveller Declaration

Last checked 27 Oct 2026

Why it matters

  • Everyone travelling into New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration, including New Zealand passport holders, babies and children.

Steps

  1. Complete your declaration on the official New Zealand Traveller Declaration website or in the NZTD app.
  2. If you're flying, the earliest you can submit it is 24 hours before your trip to New Zealand starts. It must be done before you reach passport control.
  3. Have ready your passport, your first address in New Zealand, your travel history for the last 30 days, your flight details, and your visa or NZeTA details if you need one.
  4. Declare goods you got overseas worth more than NZ$700 in total, including gifts, and alcohol or tobacco over the allowances.
  5. Declare cash of NZ$10,000 or more, goods for business use, and goods you're carrying for someone else.
  6. Declare food, plants, wooden items, animal products and used outdoor equipment.
  7. Declare medicine that is more than three months' supply or that isn't prescribed to you.
  8. If your details change or you change your flight booking, update your declaration and submit it again. If the airline changes your flight to another day, update it too.
  9. If you're not sure about an item when you land, use the amnesty bins or ask a quarantine officer.

Documents you'll need

  • For prescription medicine: a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor, with the medicine in its original packaging

Common mistakes

  • Paying a website to complete the declaration for you. Customs says these sites are not affiliated with the New Zealand Government.
  • Leaving an item off by accident. Forgetting isn't accepted as a reason for not declaring it.

Watch out for

  • Customs says you could face a $400 instant fine if you fail to declare restricted or prohibited items, or make a false or incorrect declaration.
  • Controlled drugs must be declared, and you can bring no more than one month of supply.
  • If you can't use the app or website, a paper form is available when you arrive.
  • For help with the declaration, the Customs contact centre is on 0800 359 269 in New Zealand or +64 4 931 5799 from overseas.

Cost

  • Completing the declaration is free.
